Ukraine is one of the biggest countries in the Central-East of Europe.
Area – 603,700 sq km. The territory of Ukraine exceeds the territory of such European countries as France (544,000 sq km), Spain (505,000 sq km), Germany (356,300 sq km). Ukraine is stretched for 893 km from North to South and 1316 km from East to West.
At the territory of Ukraine there is the geographical center of Europe (by the village Dilove of Zakarpatskiy Oblast, Rakhyvsky Region).
Ukraine is expanded in temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere and has broad exit to the Black and Azov Seas. Being situated at the crossroads of the western and eastern peoples and cultures it has had a certain influence on the history and development of the country.
Ukraine is the fifth country in Europe by its population (after FRG, Italy, Great Britain and France) and the 21st in the world.
In Ukraine there prevails the rural population (68%). There are 5 cities- millionaires: Kyiv (2 millions 630 thousands), Kharkiv (1 million 555 thousands), Dnipropetrovsk (I million 147 thousands), Donetsk (1 million 88 thousands) and Odessa (I million 46 thousands).
The average life expectancy of men is 61.6 years and of women - 72.8 years.
The population statistical structure is the following: male population - 46 per cent, female - 54 per cent
Ethnic Composition: Ukrainians - 73 per cent, Russians - 21 per cent, others - 6 per cent.
According to the Constitution Ukraine is a republic, a sovereign and independent, democratic social and legal country.
State symbols: a dark blue – yellow flag, national emblem (the main element – a trident) and a national anthem.

State power of Ukraine is founded on the principles of state power separation between legislative, executive and judicial branches. The Constitution of Ukraine has a supreme legal power. Laws and other legislative and normative acts are approved on the basis of the Ukraine Main Law and should strictly correspond to it.
The President of Ukraine is the Head of the Ukrainian state, the Ukraine ‘s Armed Forces Supreme Commander-in-Chief. Beginning with 1994 Mr. Leonid Kuchma is the President of Ukraine who was elected for the second term in 1999. The President of Ukraine is elected once in five years on the basis of the common and direct electing right.
The Ukraine‘s Parliament is the Verkhovna Rada, the united legislative body of the state. It consists of 450 members. One half of PMs of Ukraine is elected according to principles of the proportional basis, the second half– of the majoritary one. PMs of the Verkhovna Rada are elected once in four years.
Executive power is exercised by Cabinet of Ukraine and local bodies of state executive power (oblast regional state administrations, local radas). Local self-governing is provided by radas (councils).
Justice in Ukraine is exercised by the Constitutional Court, courts of general jurisdiction and specialized courts. The Supreme Court of Ukraine is the highest judicial body of general jurisdiction in courts system.
In 1996 the Ukraine Verkhovna Rada adopted the Constitution.
The present administrative and territorial system of Ukraine includes the Crimean Autonomous Republic and 24 oblasts.
In Ukraine there are 490 regions and 446 towns.
The Ukraine territorial structure is based on the unity and state territorial integrity, fusion of exercising state power centralization and decentralization, balancing of social-economic regions development according to their historic, economic, ecological, geographic and demographic peculiarities, ethnic and cultural traditions. This principle is predetermined in the Constitution of Ukraine.
